What Is YAG Capsulotomy?
YAG capsulotomy is a laser procedure used to treat posterior capsular opacification, a common long-term complication following cataract surgery. After cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is replaced with a plastic intraocular lens (IOL) that sits in a thin, transparent membrane called the capsule. Over time, this capsule can become cloudy or thickened, leading to a gradual reduction in vision. This condition can develop months or even years after the initial cataract surgery.
The primary goal of YAG capsulotomy is to restore clear vision that may have been diminished due to the thickening or opacification of the capsule behind the IOL. The procedure creates a small opening in the cloudy capsule, allowing light to pass through clearly again, thus improving vision.
YAG Capsulotomy Treatment
The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. Eye drops are used to numb the eye and dilate the pupil.
These may be administered to prevent a temporary increase in eye pressure.
A special contact lens is placed on the eye to keep it open and focus the laser beam accurately.
A laser is used to create a small, precise opening in the clouded capsule. This allows light to pass through the capsule and reach the retina, restoring clear vision.
The entire procedure typically lasts between 5 to 10 minutes. You may hear a beeping sound and see bright flashes of light during the process.
Post-procedure, you will be monitored for any increase in eye pressure. It’s normal for your doctor to prescribe eye drops or tablets to manage this.
Regular follow-up appointments will be scheduled to ensure the eye is healing properly and to check for any complications.
Contact your doctor if you experience any of the following after the procedure: Sudden onset of floaters, Flashes of light, Severe pain, Loss of vision
The Benefits & Risks of YAG Capsulotomy
Most patients experience a significant improvement in vision following the procedure.
YAG capsulotomy is a non-invasive procedure with a quick recovery time.
There is a risk of a temporary increase in eye pressure, which is usually manageable with medication.
While rare, possible complications include retinal detachment, infection, or a small risk of vision loss.
Frequently asked questions
Most patients notice improved vision within a day or two of the procedure. The recovery time is generally short, with many people returning to their normal activities almost immediately. However, you should follow your doctor’s instructions and attend follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.
